Over a year ago now I shared this post about our plans to paint the exterior of our Mississippi home. Since then the Columbus house was painted, we found out we’d be moving to Virginia, found our new home in Virginia (the story is here!), visited our new home in Virginia and got some work done there, came back to Mississippi, hosted a bunch of advent/Christmas celebrations, welcomed another baby into the world, went through some really scary, trying times as a family, celebrated Christmas, packed up our home and then moved to Virginia *takes a deep breath*. What a season! All within that time the landscaping around the house went from beautiful and green to dormant and yellow. I snapped some photos right before we left when everything was not-so-great looking that I’ll share below. Thanks to my sweet friend, Alaura, I’m finally able to share how it looks now that the grass is green and flowers have bloomed.
Here’s a reminder of how our home looked before we painted:
Here it is after painting!
After reviewing a bunch of different samples we decided to paint the siding Benjamin Moore Swiss Coffee and shutters Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter. We painted the front and back doors (including the storm door) Sherwin Williams Iron Ore. I initially asked to have the garage door painted Iron Ore as well to try to hide the windows in the door that I really disliked but I immediately knew after they finished the first coat that it was a no go. Thankfully, they were happy to change it to Revere Pewter. It looked SO much better!
Remember that these shutters are under the porch. Notice even in this photo how the colors can vary based on the way the sunlight is hitting! The top portion is warmer while the bottom portion of the photo is much cooler.
Just so that you can get a few examples of how the paint looks throughout the day. Mid morning versus evening:
As you can see we opted to not paint the brick. We knew at this point that we were going to turn our home into a rental once we moved to Virginia so we didn’t think it was worth the added cost to paint it. Furthermore, the main goal with our color choices was to tie in the large variation in colors on the bricks better. We think that with Swiss Coffee, Revere Pewter, and Iron Ore we were able to do that.
We hired a local company to paint it for us and they did a great job. Stephen was gone for work at the time and I went home to my parents house with the kids. While we were gone they finished painting all of the siding. It was really fun to come down the driveway when we got back and see the transformation! This is the paint that they used. Even though some of the colors were technically Benjamin Moore, he had them made in Sherwin Williams paint (they’re super common colors too so this is easy for the store to do!).
Our little ones helping me decorate the porch for fall… Oh how they’ve grown since then! Random note here – see those mums in the pots? I planted them in front of the crape myrtle on the front right of the yard at the end of the season. I honestly didn’t think they’d make it they looked so bad at the time but figured I’d give it a try. Can you find them in the photo seven above? They’re huge now!
Overall we really love how refreshed the house feels with the new paint colors! It just feels more warm and cozy, don’t you think? We think it is a much better reflection of us and the work we put into the inside of the home. I’m also SO GLAD that we decided to stick to Swiss Coffee for the porch railings. I think it would’ve been too busy with the Revere Pewter.
I hope this is helpful for those of you deciding on colors for your own home! Since choosing these colors I’ve chosen probably over a dozen+ for the Virginia house and I think ordering samples from Samplize has been super super helpful so that might be something to look into. Leave any questions you have in the comments below. Until next time!
